Japan Business Initiative for Biodiversity

Working Groups

Taking great steps forward every month with collective knowledge and actions

Thematic working groups are at the center of our activities. All JBIB regular members are required to join one or more working groups in accordance with their interests. Working group members gather monthly either in person or online, and discuss and develop solutions for the issue they are working on. These monthly group meetings are the core activity of JBIB.

Themes we are working on

Group discussions are about real difficulties they experience in their business, and the results are directly fed back into the daily operation of each company. JBIB’s work is practical, and each working group’s theme stands at the forefront of the debate on how corporations relate to biodiversity.

The themes for working group activities are reviewed every year and working groups are rearranged, if necessary, according to the interests of the member companies.

As a result of these working group activities, we have issued a number of unique and practical reports and guides. Please see Publications for details.

As of the beginning of FY2021, we have the following five working groups.
→Working Group for Study of ESG Disclosure
→Working Group for Sustainable Supply Chains
→Working Group for Discovering & Sharing Green Values
→Working Group for Study of Sustainable Town Planning
→Working Group for Study of Marine Plastic Issues

The following two working groups were started in June 2021.

Working Group for Study of New International Frameworks

Despite the fact that biodiversity underpins the economy, it continues to be lost. Companies and investors who have become alarmed by this critical situation have announced various initiatives and commitments over the past several years in order to reverse this trend. Companies have also begun developing tools and other approaches to conserve biodiversity and engage in disclosure. Although useful tools and information are increasing, due to the fact that this momentum is growing at an accelerated pace, it is becoming difficult to follow up on them.

JBIB thus launched a new working group in June 2021 to skim through the wide range of international frameworks that have been newly proposed or will be developed, and to summarize and share their findings among the member companies.

Along with firmly grasping new movements that will most surely increase in response to COP15 and its outcomes, this working group will endeavor to facilitate collaboration with such momenta if necessary, and also allow contributions to be made by Japanese businesses.

Working Group for Transformative Change Action

In order to realize the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity, transformative changes for the sustainability of land use, the economy, cities and areas are essential. Accordingly, both companies and governments need to utilize Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and trial run them in the actual field to build up experience and know-how.

The use and management of land that give more consideration to biodiversity have recently been gaining attention as a means for transformative change as “other effective area-based conservation measures” (OECMs).

In view of such trends, it is planned to have this working group be the pipe for collaboration between JBIB member companies and local governments that are putting efforts into sustainable community development, so that they can conduct practical activities for land use as well as the restoration and utilization of ecosystems, which will be beneficial for both sustainable community development and OECMs and other means for transformative change.
